Canada September LV Sales Tripped Up

Executive Summary

Despite an increase in light trucks, Canada light-vehicle sales fell slightly in the month.

Canadian dealers delivered 172,920 light vehicles in September, down from 174,084 in the same month last year. With 25 selling days this year and last, September’s daily deliveries averaged 6,917 units, less than a percentage difference than year-ago at 6,963.

Light trucks continue to help the market with a 3.2% increase year-over-year to a DSR of 4,594, marking the eighth consecutive light-truck September sales record that began at 63,643 in 2009. There was also an increase over Q3 last year, where 333,418 units were sold in the July-September period compared to 342,474 units this year.

Cars, however, continue to fall with a 7.4% decrease from September 2015 and 0.6% from August. Unlike light trucks, car sales decreased from year-over-year Q3, falling 9.3%.

General Motors, the No.1 automaker, had a strong September performance, delivering 25,466 units, up from 24,960 a year ago. A similar effort was recorded by No.2 Ford, which increased from 27,887 to 29,464.

Light-vehicle sales so far this year total 1,505,874 units, 3.3% ahead of 1,457,586 in the same January-September period. Light trucks spurred the increase with 985,058 units, up from 894,882 in 2015, a 10.1% increase. Cars decreased from 562,704 last year to 520,816 units this year, a 7.4% decrease.
