Mexico Sees Record April LV Sales

Executive Summary

Mexico’s LV selling pace cooled again in April, but that did not prevent both cars and light trucks from achieving new benchmarks for the month

April marked the fourth consecutive month in which the average daily light-vehicle selling rate dipped below that of the prior month in Mexico.

But an extra selling day lifted the month’s volume to an April record of 118,219 units that bested the prior April peak of 94,611 set just a year ago.

Mexican dealers delivered an average 4,378 new LVs on each of the month’s 27 selling days, 2.5% below March’s 26-day selling pace of 4,489 on volume of 117,724 vehicles, but surpassed by 20.3% the 3,639 units sold on each of 26 days a year ago.

Both cars and light trucks established new April sales records.

Car deliveries rose 17.7%, to 76,784 units, from prior year’s then-record 62,810. Although April sales also bested the 75,130 units posted in March, the daily selling rate slipped 1.6% due to April’s extra selling day.

Light trucks reached 41,435 units, 25.5% more than the 31,801 retailed in the same month a year ago and fell just shy of the 41,594 delivered in March.

LV sales in the first four months of the year totaled 465,179 units, 16.2% above like-2015’s 400,399 deliveries.

Despite selling more LVs this year, most brands saw their market shares slip, thanks to inroads by Kia which had not begun selling vehicles in Mexico at this point in 2015.  Kia’s 13,760 deliveries garnered a 2.9% share of 2016 Mexico LV sales through April.

Only Toyota, 6.5% vs. 5.9%, and Hyundai, 6.0% against 5.6%, scored market share gains in January-April.
