VIENNA – Serial production of the Opel Astra sedan is launched at the General Motors Mfg. Poland Sp. z o.o. plant in Gliwice, Poland.
The new Astra sedan, which is the fifth body style in the current Astra range, comes much later than other Astra versions, which are manufactured in Belgium, Germany and the U.K.
The Polish-made sedan primarily is destined for Eastern Europe and Turkey, in contrast with other Astra versions, which are sold all over Europe and some non-European markets.
The new model will be offered with two gasoline and two diesel engines that produce 90-140 hp.
In addition to the new Astra sedan, the Gliwice plant builds versions of the previous-generation Opel Astra, called the Astra Classic II, as well as the Opel Zafira multipurpose vehicle.
The Polish plant produced 186,358 vehicles in 2006 and plans to make some 180,000 units this year.
