Pontiac Urged to Adopt El Camino Name

CHICAGO – Despite the fact it marks a return of the car/truck concept popularized by the Chevrolet El Camino, Pontiac has chosen to call its car/truck derivative of the G8 sedan the G8 ST.

G8 ST won out in a contest in which more than 80,000 people submitted 18,000 names for the car/truck derivative of the G8 that comes out late in 2009 as a ’10 model powered by a 6L V-8.

Pontiac says the G8 ST designation is in keeping with its alphanumeric badging of late, the G5, G6, and G8.

The G8 ST was one of the most popular names among those entered in the contest, along with El Camino, which wasn’t chosen because it was decided the name belonged on a Chevy, not a Pontiac.

Pontiac will pick one from among the 80,000 entrants and award a G8 ST as a prize.
