Audi to invest 500 mln euros before new A3 launch

FRANKFURT, Dec 16 (Reuters) - The luxury Audi unit of Volkswagen AG said on Monday it was spending over 500 million euros ($510 million) on new facilities at its Ingolstadt home ahead of the launch of its revamped A3 hatchback next year.

In what it described as one of the biggest building and investment projects in its history, the German car brand said it was building a new body shop with 400 robots capable of turning out 630 cars a day as well as a new press to make panels for the forthcoming A3.

The new installations would provide work for around 750 people, most of them already employed within the firm.

Audi said earlier this month it planned to spend 11.4 billion euros over the next five years overhauling its product range, with around 80 percent of the investment going towards projects in Germany.
