Chrysler announces its new 3.0 EcoDiesel V-6 engine in the Ram 1500 pickup has earned a 28 mpg (8.4 L/100 km) highway rating from the U.S. EPA, the best highway-cycle test result ever achieved by fullsize pickup.

The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will achieve 20 mpg (11.7 L/100 km) in the city, giving it a 23 mpg (10.2 L/100 km) combined city/highway rating.

A 2014 Wards 10 Best Engine recipient, the EcoDiesel is the first turbodiesel offered in the half-ton pickup segment. Featuring an all-new engine block and bedplate composed of compacted graphite iron, the engine produces 240 hp and 420 lb.-ft. (569 Nm) of torque.

The ’14 Ram 1500 will be assembled at the automaker’s Warren, MI, truck plant, with regular cab models to be built in Saltillo, Mexico. Dealers can begin taking orders for EcoDiesel models Feb. 7.
