FACTBOX-Airlines cancel over 500 flights

DALLAS, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Airlines canceled or plan to cancel over 500 flights on Friday due to the broad power outage in the northeastern United States and Canada, and warned that number could grow due to disrupted airport operations.

Airlines said most of their cancellations came from flights serving New York's John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports as well as Detroit. Other affected airports include Cleveland and Toronto.

ANNOUNCED FRIDAY CANCELLATIONS

-- American Airlines said it canceled 183 flights on Friday. The world's largest carrier canceled 141 flights on Thursday.

-- Delta Air Lines said it expected to cancel 91 flights on Friday from JFK, LaGuardia and Detroit.

-- U.S. Airways announced 61 flights would be canceled, including shuttles from LaGuardia to Boston and Washington, D.C.

-- JetBlue Airways , whose main operation is from JFK airport, said it expected to cancel 20 flights. The carrier canceled two flights on Thursday.

-- United Airlines said it has canceled 40 flights on Friday. It canceled 19 on Thursday.

-- Southwest Airlines canceled 17 flights serving Detroit. It canceled 30 flights on Thursday.

-- American Eagle, the regional carrier affiliated with American, canceled 59 flights on Friday after canceling 57 on Thursday.

-- Continental Airlines , said it canceled 11 flights on Friday. It canceled 33 flights on Thursday.

-- Air Canada canceled all flights in its worldwide network on Friday after emergency power systems crashed at its main operations control center near Toronto, stranding thousands of passengers in Canadian airports. Canada's largest airline operates an average of 720 flights a day.

AIRLINES YET TO ANNOUNCE FRIDAY CANCELLATIONS

-- Northwest Airlines said it canceled 216 flights on Thursday, mostly into and out of its Detroit hub. It expects significant cancellations on Friday, but not as many as it tallied on Thursday.
