Ford to build new Focus in Spain

MADRID, Nov 14 (Reuters) - U.S. motor giant Ford has chosen its Almussafes plant in Spain's Valencia coastal region to produce some of its new generation Focus cars, a Ford spokesman said on Friday.

"(On Thursday) it was confirmed that Saarlouis (in Germany) will be the main production centre for the new Focus and Valencia will participate in the project, chosen over the Cologne plant," the spokesman said, confirming a newspaper report.

The Almussafes plant already shares production of the first generation of Focus cars with the Saarlouis plant.

From January to October, Ford made around 320,000 vehicles at Almussafes, of which 150,000 were Focus models.

The other cars made at the Valencia centre are the Ford Ka, Fiesta and Mazda 2.

Almussafes employs 7,100 people and produces about 400,000 cars per year. It will continue to produce about 400,000 units a year as the new Focus replaces the current model in 2004.
