PARIS, Jan 13 (Reuters) - A clampdown on reckless driving on French roads is proving a surprise policy hit for President Jacques Chirac ahead of regional elections this year.
Moves to save lives helped reduce the death toll on France's roads, long the highest in western Europe, by about 20 percent in 2003 and a new opinion poll shows the measures have overwhelming public support.
