Funds chase NY precious metals to multi-year highs

NEW YORK, March 1 (Reuters) - New York platinum topped $900 an ounce for the first time in 24 years on Monday and silver breached $7 an ounce, as an unsteady dollar emboldened speculators to direct more firepower at the precious metals markets.

NYMEX platinum led the rally which lifted silver to its loftiest since February 1998 on the COMEX trading floor. Gold briefly revisited $400 an ounce but stayed $30 below January's 15-year high.
