Germany may scrap road tax, raise petrol duties

BERLIN, July 10 (Reuters) - Germany's finance ministry said on Friday it was considering the abolition of road tax and instead raising duties on petrol.

"That's one approach that's being pursued," said a ministry spokesman.

As vehicle taxes accrue to Germany's 16 states and not the federal government, the states could in compensation be given the revenue from taxes on insurance premiums, a government source added.
