Canada Big-Truck Sales Rose 5.0% in November

Class 8 deliveries gained 6.6%, lifted by Daimler’s Western Star brand, up 28.1%, and Freightliner, up 8.5%.

Canada’s big-truck sales were up for the second month in a row, rising 5.0% in November as all segments except Class 7 gained volume from year-ago, WardsAuto data shows.Combined medium- and heavy-duty deliveries through 11 months were up 3.7% on volume of 38,738 units, against 37,361 year-ago.

Class 8 deliveries rose 6.6%, lifted by volume leader Daimler’s Western Star brand, up 28.1% and Freightliner, up 8.5%. PACCAR’s Kenworth and Peterbilt makes also reported gains of 25.5% and 22.6%, respectively. International and Volvo suffered double-digit losses while Mack declined 5.2%. Year-to-date heavy-truck sales stood at 26,377 units, 4.4% ahead of year-ago.

Sales in the medium-duty segment were relatively flat, up just 0.8%. A double-digit gain in Class 6 was enough to offset Class 7 losses. Overall medium-duty deliveries through 11 months were up 2.3% to 12,361 units.

Class 7 sales plunged 19.7%, mostly due to a 67.2% drop posted by International. Peterbilt reported the strongest results, up 26.6% while volume leader Freightliner rose 14.6%.

Market share leader International led Class 6 to the best performance of any segment in November, posting a 74.9% surge helping to lift total Class 6 sales 51.6%. Ford sales soared 834.6%, however on sales of only nine units.

Class 5 deliveries were up a modest 4.3% to 487 units on mixed results. Freightliner led the group, posting a 170.0% increase, while Isuzu was up 84.6%. Top seller Ford dropped 11.4% while Chrysler rose 23.1%, gaining more than five percentage points of market share to 32.9%.

Deliveries of imported Isuzu and Mitsubishi Fuso models posted identical results, up 107.7% while Isuzu domestic models were up 122.5%, giving Class 4 a slight sales boost of 3.8%. Sales leader Ford dropped 13.7% and saw its share plummet to 67.4% from 81.1% year-ago.
