Canada Big-Truck Sales See Double-Digit Gain in 2011

All groups except Class 4 posted increases in December including Class 7, up 43.3%, and Class 8, up 30.3%, pushing full-year deliveries to 25,512.

Canada’s medium- and heavy-duty truck deliveries jumped 25.3% in December, compared with year-ago, to 3,514 units, helping push full-year big-truck volume up 33.3% to 38,234.

Class 7 was the runaway winner in the month on a percentage basis, with sales up 43.4% to a modest 341. For the year, Class 7 notched a 13.6% gain to 3,473 units, according to WardsAuto data.

Class 8 followed, rising 30.3% in December to 2,456 units. Sales were bolstered by PACCAR’s Kenworth brand, up 71.0%, and Peterbilt, up 61.2%. Full-year deliveries jumped 34.9% to 25,512.

Class 6 sales rose 24.4% in December largely due to Daimler’s Freightliner brand, up 155.4% to 61 units. International was the volume winner for the month with 90 deliveries, good for an 11.1% increase compared with like-2010. Class 6 full-year sales soared 60.1% to 2,371 units.

International’s 702.5% December spike helped boost Class 5 sales 8.5% to 435 units for the month. Peterbilt deliveries grew 285.2%, helping offset Ford’s 18.7% drop and Freightliner’s 35.8% decline.

Class 5 sales in 2011 climbed 45.8% to 5,377 units. International led on a percentage basis, up 244.8% to 431. Ford was the volume winner, spiking 75.1% to 2,385.

Class 4 sales tumbled 21.6% to 114 units in December, as segment-leader Ford posted a 51.0% decline compared with year-ago. Daimler sales led on percentage basis, up 509.9%, albeit to just 38 units.

Class 4 deliveries fell 3.0% to 1,501 for full-year 2011, with Ford accounting for 1,203 units of the annual tally.
