Ford Australia Likens Mustang Mania to Beatlemania

The first Mustang fastback and convertibles have landed in Melbourne and three more ships carrying the cars are expected within days.

Ford Australia, comparing demand for the Mustang to the hysteria surrounding the Beatles’ first trip Down Under, says it has sold out its entire 2016 allocation of the first right-hand-drive pony car.

Dealers have received 4,000 pre-orders, with more than 80% of customers paying deposits.

The first Mustang fastback and convertibles have landed in Melbourne and three more ships carrying the cars are expected within days.

Ford Australia President and CEO Graeme Whickman says demand for the all-new Mustang has exceeded all expectations by Ford and its dealers.

“We are simply overwhelmed and humbled by the reception to Mustang thus far, which is probably our closest equivalent to the Beatles’ first trip to Australia,” Whickman says in a statement.

After Mustang pricing was confirmed early this year, Ford saw a spike in interest and deposits, with more than 20,000 people asking to be kept informed about the new car.

Overwhelming early Australian interest has been in the GT models, with 86% of customers favoring the V-8 to 14% for the V-6. Once the initial order banks are filled, Ford expects the 2.3L EcoBoost model to be popular with customers who value performance but have an eye on fuel efficiency.

About 88% of Australian customers are opting for the fastback to 12% for the convertible.
