CHICAGO – Hyundai introduces the refreshed ’16 Elantra GT, which receives updated styling and new features, including a next-generation Blue Link infotainment system.
Unveiled at the Chicago auto show here, the Elantra GT comes standard with a 2.0L inline 4-cyl. engine producing 173 hp and 154 lb.-ft. (208 Nm) of torque, which replaces the 1.8L I-4. The engine comes mated to either a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox. The car is estimated to achieve a 24/33 mpg (9.8-7.1 L/100 km) city/highway fuel-economy rating.
The car carries over Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture design language, which the automaker says provides it with a 0.30 coefficient of drag and a smoother, quieter ride.
Three driving modes – comfort, normal and sport – are available, while a selectable steering mode adjusts power assistance levels to moderate on-center feel.
The Elantra GT receives a new front grille and projector headlamps that are more consistent with Hyundai’s newer models, while a chrome beltline molding accentuates the car’s sleek character lines.
Inside the 5-door hatch boasts dual-zone climate controls with an automatic defogging system that detects humidity levels and activates the system accordingly. Additionally, a clean-air ionizer automatically scrubs the air when the heater or air conditioning is operating.
New for ’16 is segment-first ventilated seats, available in the tech package. Heated seats are standard.
The tech package includes Hyundai’s new-generation navigation system and infotainment system, also found on higher-end models such as the Genesis and Sonata. The system is accessed via a 7-in. (18-cm) multi-touch display and features HD radio, Sirius XM Travel Link, as well as pre-installed apps such as Pandora. A split-screen interface allows map and music information to be displayed at the same time on the home screen.
The ’16 Elantra GT starts at $18,800, not including a $825 destination and delivery charge, and goes on sale in March.
