May Vehicle Sales in New Zealand Best Since 1990

New Zealand’s new-vehicle sales in May were the best in more than two decades as the SUV segment accounted for 30% of total deliveries.
Motor Industry Assn. data shows car sales rose 6.8% to 6,347 units for the best May result since 1990. Commercial vehicles climbed 9.0% to 2,577, also the strongest May since 1990.
The result left year-to-date car sales ahead 4.0% to 32,239 units and CV deliveries up a healthy 32.4% to 11,573.
Toyota held firmly to its title of market leader with May sales of 1,731 units, comprising 1,072 cars and 659 CVs, for a 19.4% market share. GM Holden followed with 692, just ahead of Hyundai with 685.
Last month’s top-selling car was the Holden Captiva with 304 deliveries, ahead of the Hyundai Santa Fe (270), Toyota Corolla (268) and Suzuki Swift (264). The Corolla led comfortably after five months with 2,008 sales, ahead of the Swift (1,400), and Santa Fe (1,025).
The Ford Ranger topped the New Zealand CV market in May with 483 units, ahead of the Toyota Hilux (447) and Holden Colorado (195).
The Hilux (1,785) continued as the No.1 pickup after five months, but by just four units over the Ranger (1,781).
