Mexico Production Up in September; Sales Post Modest Gain

Light-vehicle sales in Mexico rose 3.9% to 79,802, with a 13.5% jump in light trucks and an 0.8% uptick in cars.

Mexico light-vehicle production in September climbed 9.1% compared with year-ago to 257,759, as an 11.7% gain in builds for export offset a 1.0% drop in domestic output.

Detroit Three output rose 14.6% to 131,160, with General Motors Mexico and Chrysler Mexico posting improvements of 34.6% and 30.8%, respectively. Ford Mexico slid 16.4%.

Among the Asian auto makers, Nissan Mexico’s output was off 10.8% compared with year-ago, while Honda Mexico fell 3.3%. Toyota Mexico was up 2.8%.

Volkswagen Mexico output jumped 31.7% compared with like-2011, to 55,487.

Light-vehicle sales in Mexico in September were up 3.9% to 79,802 units, with a 13.5% increase in light trucks and a 0.8% uptick in cars.

Detroit auto makers’ car sales rose 9.6% to 17,730 units. Ford and Chrysler deliveries climbed 62.3% and 15.3%, respectively, while GM was off 0.2%.

Asian auto makers’ car deliveries fell 14.5% to 17,882 units, with volume leader Nissan posting a 21.4% drop to 12,190. Honda and Toyota results jumped 27.4% and 37.5%, respectively.

European-brand car sales grew 7.2% to 15,616 units. VW deliveries were up 7.8%, while Audi Mexico and BMW Mexico posted increases of 28.2% and 40.2%, respectively.

Top-selling car nameplates included the Dodge Charger (up 195.9%), Chevrolet Aveo (up 117.4%), Nissan Altima (up 169.2%), Toyota Corolla (up 87.2%) and Fiat 500 (up 99.3%).

In the light-truck segment, Detroit Three deliveries slipped 3.3% to 11,931 units. Ford sales fell 15.0%, while GM and Chrysler saw modest gains of 6.6% and 0.5%, respectively.

Asian auto makers’ light-truck sales jumped 32.0%, fueled by a 28.0% increase by volume-leader Nissan. Honda and Toyota posted gains of 105.5% and 56.7%, respectively.

European-brand light-truck deliveries grew 21.5% vs. year-ago to 3,242, with VW sales up 5.1% and Renault Mexico up 133.8%.

Standout marques in the light-truck segment last month included the Chevrolet Colorado (up 63.9%), Honda CR-V (up 159.1%), Nissan Frontier (up 98.6%) and Toyota RAV4 (up 194.2%).
