Output in China Tops 2 Million in September

Car and light-truck builds grew considerably in the month, up 5.8% and 4.5%, respectively.

Vehicle production in China totaled 2,007,075 units in September, up 4.3% from like-2013. This was the fourth month in 2014 to see production top the 2 million-unit mark, and was the largest volume posted since April.

Car and light-truck builds grew considerably in the month, up 5.8% and 4.5%, respectively. Car production topped 1 million for the first time since June with 1,102,645 units built, the largest volume since December 2013’s 1,163,966-unit finish. Light trucks also saw their largest monthly volume since April with an 815,176-unit total.

Bus production rebounded in September, climbing 5.3% from year-ago following a 0.4% drop in August, while medium/heavy trucks were unable to post positive growth in the month, falling 15.1% from year-ago.

Production of the all-new GoNow GX6 began in September with just 22 units built. The vehicle was one of many new SUVs to hit the market in the last year and is a more affordable version of Land Rover’s Range Rover Sport model. Prices will range from RMB110,000 to RMB160,000 ($17,900 to $26,053).

SAIC GM-Wuling’s Hongguang van landed the top spot among models in September for the 12th consecutive month with 58,735 units produced. Shanghai VW’s Lavida placed second with 47,374 units and FAW Volkswagen’s Jetta sedan rounded out the top three with 46,276 units.

With an 8.4% share of the market, FAW Volkswagen was the top-producing manufacturer in the month. SAIC GM trailed slightly with a 7.8% share of production and SAIC GM-Wuling placed third with 7.5%.

Through September, 17,225,850 vehicles were produced in China, up 8.1% from like-2013.
