Japan TOPIX down 3 pct on U.S. economy, stronger yen

TOKYO, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Japan's TOPIX index extended falls on Wednesday to slide 3 percent on a surging yen and growing fears of a U.S. recession.

Exporters such as Nissan Motor Co and Sony Corp fell after the dollar hit a 2-1/2-year low below 106.60 yen .

At 0025 GMT the broad TOPIX was down 3.2 percent at 1,306.68 and the benchmark Nikkei average was down 2.5 percent at 13,620.33, a loss of 352.30 points. (Reporting by Elaine Lies)
