Malaysia passenger car sales flat in May

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Reuters) - Sales of Malaysia's passenger cars hit 33,555 units in May, barely changed from 33,325 a month earlier, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said in a statement on Monday.

Commercial vehicle sales totalled 5,127 units against 5,088 the month before, the group said.

For the first five months of the year, total motor vehicle sales were 183,357 units, in line with its target of record sales of 410,000 units for the whole year.

National carmaker Proton , which is protected by government tariffs of up to 300 percent on rival foreign brands, maintained its 60 percent share of the passenger car market with sales of 19,417 units.
