Mexico LV Sales See October Boost

Asian makes again outpace brands with a 4.5% year-over-year October sales gain and an 11.8% increase for the year.

Thanks to four additional selling days, Mexico light-vehicle sales volume climbed 12.8% from September’s storm-ravaged 78,144 units to 88,183 in October, a 5-year high for the month, that bested prior-year’s 82,914 October deliveries.

However, the average daily rate fell 3.9% to 3,266 units on each of 27 selling days in October from 3,397 each of 23 days the prior month, although it topped by 2.4% the 3,189-a-day pace posted in October a year ago, in which there were 26 selling days.

Although the month’s volume was the best since 96,576 LVs were sold in 2007, it posed no threat to the October record of 96,842 deliveries set in 2006.

Both car and light-truck sales ranked fifth-best for October.

The 55,147 cars sold in the month were slightly more than the 53,084 delivered a year earlier, due solely to the fact there was an additional selling day. But the tally ranked well behind the record 60,915 cars sold in October 2000.

October sales of 33,036 light trucks beat prior-year’s 29,830 units by 6.6% in daily rate, but lagged the record 43,220 units sold in 2007 in both volume and rate.

Asian makes led the industry with a 4.3% daily rate gain on volume to 36,656 deliveries from 33,844 in October 2012, while European brands climbed 4.5% on sales of 22,188 LVs compared with 20,422 in like-2012.

The 29,339 units sold by the Detroit Three edged ahead of 28,628 a year earlier, but the daily rate trailed by 1.3%.

LV sales for the first 10 months totaled 842,219 units, up 7.5% from 783,458 in like-2012.
