American Suzuki Motor Corp. appoints Gary N. Akin as vice president-sales, filling a vacancy created by the departure of Tom Carney Oct. 31.

In his new position, Akin will oversee the auto maker’s network of more than 530 dealers in 49 states.

Akin, who has more than 20 years of experience in the automotive industry, has worked for a number of auto makers in a variety of capacities.

He joins ASMC at a time of growth. In 2006, sales were up 23.0% over prior-year, reaching a record 100,990 units, according to Ward’s data.

Suzuki started the new year strong, posting a monthly record in January with sales up 8.9% to 8,179 units.
