• After months of legal wrangling with trade officials on two continents, Siemens VDO Automotive Corp. clears its final U.S. regulatory hurdle and is free to do business as the world's third largest supplier of automotive electronics (behind Robert Bosch GmbH and Delphi Automotive Systems). Siemens VDO will be based in Auburn Hills, MI, with combined 2001 sales of approximately $5 billion.

  • Hayes Lemmerz International Inc., which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December, sells its non-core System Service business to Schedl Automotive in Germany. The business has 250 employees and operates five tire and wheel assembly operations in Belgium, Germany, the Czech Republic and Portugal.
