Bentley to Move North American HQ to Boston

Bentley says the decision to relocate to Boston comes partially in reaction to parent Volkswagen of America’s planned move to Virginia.

Bentley Motors Inc. announces the relocation of its North American corporate headquarters to Boston as part of a strategic realignment of its regional operations.

Bentley’s current North American headquarters are in Auburn Hills, MI, where it shares a facility with parent Volkswagen of America Inc.

Last month VWA announced plans to move its North American headquarters to northern Virginia – after 30 years in the Detroit area – in order to better serve its customers and realign its business.

The decision to relocate to Boston comes partially in reaction to VWA’s planned move, a Bentley spokesman says.

“The (VWA) move is something we looked at to determine where we wanted the brand to be,” he tells Ward’s. “And Boston offers advantages.”

One advantage is Boston’s closer proximity to Bentley’s central operations in Crewe,

U.K., the spokesman says, noting there are no direct flights between Detroit and England.

A select number of Bentley’s 30 North American employees have been offered the chance to relocate to Boston from Auburn Hills, he says.

“The exact number we’ll relocate is still to be determined,” he says.

The headquarters relocation will begin in January, with a completion date set for summer 2008.
