Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co. Ltd. begins production of the Volvo S40 sedan for the Chinese market.

Initially, two engine options will be offered – a base 2.4L inline 5-cyl. and a 2.5L turbocharged inline 5-cyl.

The production is a result of an agreement between CFMA and Volvo Car Corp. of Sweden, in which Volvo gave authority to CFMA to produce the S40 via a technological transfer.

The S40s will be sold throughout China by CFMA-authorized dealers.

The target audience for the S40 will be the “new generation of young elite, who are intelligent, confident and individualistic,” the auto maker says, adding the sales target for this year will be 4,000 units.

To ensure quality, Chinese S40 pre-production models were sent to the Volvo Safety Center for testing. They also underwent crash tests at the Auto Safety Test Center in China, CFMA says.
