Chrysler Extends Diesel Deal With Cummins

Cummins says it has built 1.7 million engines for the auto maker since 1989.

Ram Heavy Duty pickups will continue to feature Cummins Inc. 6.7L 6-cyl. turbodiesels under the hood for the foreseeable future, as Chrysler Group LLC inks a “multiyear” extension of its deal with the Columbus, IN-based engine builder.

Cummins isn’t specifying the length of the agreement, which already spans 21 years. The company says it has built 1.7 million engines for Chrysler since 1989, with more than 80% of current Ram Heavy Duty pickup buyers opting for the diesel.

The first Cummins diesel for Chrysler was a 5.9L 160-hp 6-cyl. generating 400 lb.-ft. (542 Nm) of torque. The current 6.7L pumps out 350 hp and 650 lb.-ft. (881 Nm) of torque and is 90% cleaner, the engine builder says.
