Detroit Auto Show Adds Two More Chinese Auto Makers

Both companies specialize in vehicles powered via alternative energy sources.

January’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit now will feature five Chinese auto makers.

Added to the list of previously announced three auto makers Chinese American Cooperative Automotive Inc., Changfeng Group Co. Ltd. and Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. are BYD Auto and Li Shi Guang Ming Auto Design Co.

“All are displaying (but) it is still to be determined what vehicles they will show,” a spokeswoman for the Detroit show tells Ward’s. She adds all will be on hand during press days, set for Jan. 13-15, but is not sure if they also will display during the ensuing public days.

BYD Auto is the automotive arm of BYD Company Ltd., the second-largest battery producer in the world, and through the acquisition of Tsinchuan Automobile Co. makes six models.

BYD Auto wants to use its parent company’s battery expertise to develop and manufacture hybrids in the future, Detroit auto show literature says.

Li Shi Guang Ming was founded in 2002 and is the first independent local auto design firm in China, according to its website. It says it displayed an electric vehicle, Tang Hua, at the 9th China Beijing International Hi-Tech Expo.
