EPA Says California OK to Regulate Tailpipe Emissions

The Environmental Protection Agency grants California the authority to regulate tailpipe emissions standards on new vehicles sold in the state, a largely procedural ruling given the combined federal fuel-economy and carbon-dioxide emission rules set last month.

The EPA says in a statement today it gives California this authority based on the “seriousness of the state’s air-pollution challenges.” The authority begins with the current model year.
