VIENNA – General Motors Mfg. Poland Sp. z o.o. will discontinue the third shift at its plant in Gliwice at the beginning of 2009.

The auto maker halted production at the factory for three weeks in October, followed by a break from Nov. 17-21 and 24-26. It also plans shutdowns for Dec. 3-5 and 17-19.

The Gliwice plant builds the previous-generation Opel Astra, dubbed the Astra II Classic, the current-generation Opel Astra sedan and Opel Zafira multipurpose vehicle.

Through October, the factory produced an estimated 158,500 cars, up 4.5% from like-2007.
