The-Kia Automotive Group failed to topple sales in May, as predicted, but the two juggernauts did overtake .
The Korean auto makers, whose sales and marketing units are separate entities in the U.S. despite having the same corporate parent, sold 107,426 combined units last month, Ward’s data shows.
Japan’s No.2 auto maker delivered 90,773 units in May, including bothand Acura brands.
In what’s becoming a broken record,and Kia both report record U.S. monthly sales.
Hyundai sold 59,214 units, up 10,000 from year-ago, its fifth consecutive monthly all-time sales record for the brand.
The new Elantra compact was especially hot for Hyundai in May, with 20,006 sales, compared with 9,781 year-ago. The Elantra topped both the Honda Civic andCorolla, which includes the Matrix hatchback.
However, the Chevrolet Cruze was the best-selling compact car in May, with 22,711 units.
Kia’s best-ever month saw 48,212 deliveries, with the Sorento cross/utility vehicle remaining the brand’s No.1 seller at 11,936 units.
Sales of the new midsize Optima sedan increased more than 5,000 units from year-ago. The Soul also had a super month, with 11,157 deliveries, ranking just below the Sorento.
