VIENNA – Production of transmissions is under way at Hyundai Motor Mfg. Czech s.r.o.’s new plant in Nosovice, Czech Republic.

“It is really a historical moment for us, because today we launch production in our first Hyundai plant in Europe,” Kim Eok-Jo, President of HMMC, says in a prepared statement released last week.

Some 35,000 gearboxes are to be manufactured in Nosovice this year. Production is to be increased gradually toward a capacity of 600,000 transmissions a year in 2011.

Several parts are being sourced from within the region. For example, Nemak Poland Sp. z o.o., the supplier known as Teksid Aluminium Poland Sp. z o.o. until 2007, manufactures housings for the Czech-made Hyundai transmissions.

The Nosovice-built gearboxes are destined for Hyundai cars that are to be produced at the same plant. They’ll also be installed in Kia cars made at the Kia Motors Slovakia s.r.o. plant in Slovakia.

Production of the Hyundai i30 model is slated to launch in Nosovice in November.
