Motor Co. Ltd. releases information and sketches of the next-generation Sonata midsize sedan a day before the auto maker begins to take orders for the model in South Korea.
The Korean version of the Sonata will receive a 6-speed automatic transmission and a 2.0L 4-cyl. version of’s Theta II gasoline engine, Hyundai says.
An electronic stability control system now is standard on the car in Korea, and creature comforts include steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, push-button start and a panoramic sunroof.
With the new Sonata, Hyundai introduces its “fluidic sculpture” design language, “a new (styling) direction that will play a pivotal role in enhancing the brand,” the auto maker says in a statement.
Sketches of the car reveal a “coupe-like” exterior, Hyundai says, noting sharp-edged headlights and a wide radiator grille as design features.
Some 4.45 million units of the Sonata have been sold worldwide since the car’s October 1985 debut, Hyundai says.
As Ward’s recently reported, the new Sonata in the U.S. will not offer a V-6 engine and only have a 4-cyl. engine using gasoline direct injection for improved fuel economy. A hybrid-electric version of the Sonata is expected to go on sale later in the car’s lifecycle.
