Mazda Motor Corp. will take the wraps off its new Kusabi concept car and Mazda3 production vehicle at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

Kusabi, which means “wedge” and “making way for something new” in Japanese, represents a new design direction for Mazda's future compact cars. The concept is powered by a 1.6L common-rail diesel.

Styling on the Kusabi is highlighted by a sharp line extending from the hood through the body sides and into the rear fascia of the vehicle. Large wheels, pronounced fenders and an undeniable “reverse wedge” — which extends from the A-pillar rearward — round out the styling theme.

The Mazda3, meanwhile, brings styling cues from the RX-8 and Mazda6 to an all-new package. The Mazda3 is the fourth in a line of new vehicles to debut in Europe. The vehicle goes on sale in Europe in the fall and will be introduced in other key markets by fourth quarter 2004.
