Miata Retractable Hardtop to Base at $24,350

Mazda says the hardtop requires only 12 seconds to open or close and will provide the same trunk capacity as the MX-5 soft top.

Mazda North American Operations says its ’07 MX-5 Miata with Power Retractable Hard Top (PRHT) will base at $24,350, not including destination charges.

The MX-5 PRHT, which Mazda says is the first vehicle in its segment with a retractable hardtop, is powered by a 170-hp 2.0L 4-cyl. engine. Mazda says the hardtop requires only 12 seconds to open or close and provides the same trunk capacity as the MX-5 soft top.

The hardtop adds 77 lbs. (35 kg.) to the MX-5 Miata. To compensate for the extra weight, firmer shock absorbers, higher spring rates and a larger front anti-roll bar were added.

With the top down, the MX-5 PHRT is identifiable by a chrome ring around the grille opening, bright bezels inside the headlamps and a chrome band in each door.
