The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Admin. is stepping up its investigation of the fuel system on Ford Motor Co.’s Focus small car. Under scrutiny are 573,585 ’00-’01-model Focus cars, because contamination in a plastic fuel tank may clog the fuel system. Some ’02 models also are included but NHTSA has not specified how many. Thus far, 3,475 complaints regarding the problem have been filed and 18 accidents and four injuries have occurred.
