Sime Darby to Distribute Ssangyong Cars in Oz

Malaysian-based Sime Darby acquired the Peugeot-brand distribution rights in Australia in 2001.

Sime Darby Motor Group (Australia) Pty. Ltd. acquires the Australian distribution rights for Ssangyong Motor Co. Ltd. vehicles, and a new subsidiary will trade under the name Ssangyong Motors Australia, Sime Darby says in a news release.

Malaysian-based Sime Darby Bhd, one of Southeast Asia/Oceania’s largest vehicle conglomerates, acquired the Peugeot-brand distribution rights in Australia in 2001 and since then has produced record sales results.

Sime Darby Automobiles Managing Director Rob Dommerson says the acquisition of the Ssangyong franchise will add a new dimension to the distributor’s base in Australia.

The Australian Ssangyong operation will be headed by Jeff Barber as general manager and director. He has been with Sime Darby in Australia since 2001.

“In Ssangyong, we see a tremendous opportunity,” Barber says. “Ssangyong dual-cab utilities, SUVs and people movers are quality products representing excellent value for (the) money.

“The availability of diesel technology in 2- and 4-wheel drive and in both manual and automatic transmissions provides some unique propositions for our customers in Australia.”
