The 2001 Volvo S80 has been awarded the highest rating for crashworthiness by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The institute's evaluation is based on actual performance in their frontal offset impact crash tests into a barrier at 40 mph (64 km/h). Standard equipment on the '01 S80 is a complete “smart” air bag system that uses sensors to register the severity of an impact and adapt air bag inflation accordingly.
