CHICAGO – Volkswagen’s ʼ12 model Jetta GLI, unveiled here at the auto show, will base at $23,495 when it hits U.S. dealer showrooms in May.

The auto maker says it is aiming the new model at both enthusiasts and everyday drivers, and will offer three versions of the car, the base GLI, the GLI Autobahn and the GLI Autobahn with Navigation.

All are all about 3 ins. (7.6 cm) longer than the previous model and come with performance-tuned 4-way independent suspension said to improve handling and braking. Standard are a sports body appearance package and a Fender premium audio system is optional.

The Jetta GLI is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cyl. gasoline engine generating 200 hp and 207 lbs.-ft. (281 Nm) of torque. A 6-speed manual is standard, with a 6-speed automatic with manual mode paddle shifting optional.

The GLI is expected to deliver 31 mpg (7.6 L/100 km) highway with manual and 32 mpg (7.3 L/100 km) with an automatic.
