Volkswagen AG announces first-half 2008 global sales of 3.31 million vehicles to claim third place among the world’s top auto makers.

VW says its performance eclipses Ford Motor Co.’s total of 3.22 million, but still lags General Motors Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. which rank first and second, respectively.

“We are delighed that the Volkswagen Group has made it to the global automobile industry’s top three for the first time,” says Martin Winterkorn, management board chairman. “This shows that we are on the right track with our ever-stronger international presence and, above all, our product program.”
