Volkswagen AG releases a sketch of its upcoming midsize sedan, providing the best look yet at the car that will go into production at its new plant in Chattanooga, TN.
The 4-door model features a more dramatic design and is larger and more imposing than the Passat, which it is expected to replace in VW’s U.S. lineup.
The bigger sedan is expected to compete more effectively in the North American market against such cars as the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Chevrolet Malibu.
The new car, known internally as NMS (New Midsize Sedan), will be offered with gasoline and diesel engines and VW’s acclaimed DSG dual-clutch transmission.
Production will get under way in 2011 at the Chattanooga plant, which is expected to have an initial capacity for 150,000 vehicles.
