Volkswagen AG recalls 870,000 vehicles worldwide due to problems with front axles, marking the third major recall for the auto maker this year. The action covers VW Passats built between 1996 and 1999 and Audi A4 and A8 models produced from 1994-1999. Audi A6’s built between 1997 and 1999 also are affected. VW says a rubber boot on the axle is vulnerable to damage that could lead to “premature wear and in isolated cases to the failure of the bearing arm, mainly on high-mileage cars.”
