Volkswagen AG’s Puebla, Mexico, plant ended production of the old Beetle July 30, terminating the car’s 58-year run.

More than 21.5 million Beetles were made during that time span. The runner-up in all-time production numbers, Ford Motor Co.’s Model T, lags far behind at 15 million. Beetle sales stopped in Europe in 1975 and were discontinued in the U.S. in 1979. The last “Bug” off the production line, No.21,529,464, will be shipped to VW’s headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, to be put on display.
