BMW AG has developed a magnesium-aluminum engine crankcase for an inline 6-cyl. engine it will introduce in 2005. The two-part crankcase – the lower portion of the engine block that houses and supports the crankshaft and its bearings – uses a magnesium alloy where corrosion and stress do not occur, and aluminum where they do.
