BEIJING — China's production of automotive dies meets only 40% of current demand, industry experts say, predicting the country will need to begin importing them soon.

China's production of motor vehicles is anticipated to reach about 2.7 million by 2000, according to the Chinese government's development plan for the automotive industry.

This means the country will require 244,939t (270,000 tons) of various plastic parts and about 10,000 sets of plastic-injection dies, experts estimate. Such high demand, coupled with inadequate domestic production capacity, ensures China's need to import plastic auto dies, particularly large and medium-size dies.
