Chrysler LLC reportedly is cutting the third shift at its Belvidere, IL, vehicle assembly plant beginning Jan. 31, eliminating 1,096 of the plant’s 3,400 workers in a continuing effort to reduce capacity in North America.

A Chrysler spokeswoman says buyouts have been discussed with United Auto Workers union leaders at Belvidere, with the move to cut the shift being prompted by market conditions.

Belvidere builds the Dodge Caliber compact car and Jeep Compass and Patriot small cross/utility vehicles.

In the September-November period, sales of the Caliber fell 20.9%, Ward’s data shows, while the Compass was down 27.6% in the same 3-month period.
