More stories related to 2005 Greater L.A. Auto Show Following months of phone calls and mail from Viper owners wondering where the next-generation coupe is, Chrysler Group’s Dodge division strikes another venomous chord with the release of its ’06 Viper SRT10 Coupe.

“We introduced the convertible and dropped the Viper Coupe, and we had a lot of very upset customers who thought the Viper Coupe was the best execution of all,” says Trevor Creed, senior vice president, design-Chrysler Group. “So we brought it back, so to speak.”

Harkening back to the original Viper GTS Coupe, which debuted in 1996, the ’06 SRT10 features the signature “double-bubble” roof that accommodates a driver wearing a racing helmet. Chrysler engineers used a mannequin with a helmet to determine the proper clearance for the roofline.

’06 Dodge Viper SRT10 Coupe

While maintaining the signature design cues of the Viper Convertible, the SRT10 Coupe features unique wraparound tail lamps and bold rear styling. The only bodywork shared with the convertible is the front fascia and fenders, hood and doors.

What makes the Viper SRT10 Coupe tick is its 8.3L V-10 engine. Capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in just four seconds, this powerplant produces 500 hp at 5,600 rpm and 525 lbs.-ft. (712 Nm) of torque at 4,200 rpm.

The powertrain is crucial to the Viper Coupe because most Viper owners take them to a racetrack, says Dan Knott, director-Street and Racing Technology, Chrysler Group, noting SRT products are developed with racing in mind.

Dodge plans to unleash the ’06 Viper SRT10 Coupe in the U.S. this fall, with production centered at Chrysler’s Conner Ave. Assembly Plant in Detroit, where the cars are assembled by hand.
