Ford Motor Co. is reviving the iconic Boss name with a special-edition Mustang available next spring.
Named after the original ’69 model, the ’12 Mustang Boss 302 is powered by a modified version of Ford’s new 5.0L V-8.
Revised camshafts and “aggressive” control calibration pumps generate up to 440 hp and 380 lb.-ft. (515 Nm) of torque, while still offering a “smooth idle and low-end torque for around-town driving,” Ford says.
A “race-inspired” clutch and short-throw shifter connect to a 6-speed transmission, while power is transmitted to the rear wheels via carbon-fiber plates in the limited-slip differential.
Extensive work went into the car’s quad-exhaust system, which features a pipe on either side and two in the rear. The side pipes flow little exhaust but provide a “sonic experience unlike any other Mustang,” Ford says.
The suspension has been refined, with higher-rate coil springs on all four corners, stiffer bushings, a larger rear stabilizer bar and adjustable shocks and struts.
Exterior changes include a unique fascia and grille, blocked-off fog-lamp openings and a splitter to reduce drag. Each Boss will have a black or white roof panel that matches the color of a standard side stripe.
Inside, the Boss gets a unique steering wheel, as well as a dark-metallic gauge cluster and door trim that differentiates it from the standard Mustang.
Pricing of the limited-edition ’12 Mustang Boss 302 will be announced closer to its spring launch date, Ford says, declining to reveal how many units will be built.
