BUENOS AIRES — Ford Motor Co. is asking the Argentine government for subsidies for its local unit similar to those recently offered to Volkswagen AG.

Argentina is offering road improvements and a tax deferral plan to VW after the company said it would invest US$200 million to expand its plant in Cordoba, creating 1,800 jobs.

Argentina hopes such investments will help steer automakers from moving production to neighboring Brazil, where costs are lower thanks to a devalued currency.

Ford already has said it will invest US$110 million in Argentina, including US$50 million to start local Focus production.
