Honda of Canada Mfg. opens a $154 million engine facility in Alliston, ON, Canada, that will produce 200,000 4-cyl. engines annually for the auto maker’s Civic small car.
The new 310,280-sq.-ft. (28,830-sq.-m) engine plant is designed to be environmentally friendly, with energy efficiency improved by as much as 30% compared with a plant of equivalent scale, HCM says. Carbon-dioxide emissions are improved by about 15% on the same comparative basis.
The engines will be made from 100% recycled aluminum, much of which is sourced from Southern Ontario. Output is expected to reach 800 engines daily by mid-2009 at the facility, which will employ 340 workers when it reaches full capacity next year.
