Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd. stages the unveiling of its Genus concept vehicle today at the Geneva auto show.

The Genus is a D-segment coupe-wagon cross/utility vehicle that Hyundai's European Design Center crafted to appeal to those who like the sportiness of a coupe and the versatility of a utility vehicle.

“The dynamic 5-door concept blends roominess and comfort with elegance and practicality,” says Thomas Burkle, chief designer. “The Genus challenges the traditional compromise of vehicle choice faced by demanding modern lifestyles.”

The 4-wheel-drive Genus is powered by a 2.2L 4-cyl. common-rail diesel engine mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. It sports 20-in. aluminum wheels.

The Genus' long wheelbase combined with reduced front and rear overhangs and wide stance create a more spacious interior. The integral hatch in the vehicle's floor can be lifted to reveal a retractable bench seat, Hyundai says.

The seat extends out and rests over the trunk sill and, when combined with a sliding deck hidden in the bumper, forms a multi-use outdoor seat, the auto maker says.

Large side windows retract, and there is a large panoramic glass roof to “enable multi-sensorial experiences normally associated with coupes and cabriolets,” Hyundai says.

Styling cues include a hexagonal mouth on the Genus' front, as well as jewel-like swept-back headlamps similar to birds' eyes.

The vehicle has a cab forward silhouette with a tapering roofline that drops away at the rear.

A contoured instrument panel and foldable center stack are prominent interior styling features.

Interior materials include natural aubergine leather and a silk-like reflective textile with contrasting light beige leather inserts. Anodized metallic detailing is used on the air vents and instrument surround.
